A guest lecture on a very pertinent topic of ‘Immigration Problem among Punjab Youth’ was organized in the college on 3rd Oct 2022. The speaker, Dr. Dharmpal, ICDEOL, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla presented his research findings on the topic, which were eye-opening for the students. He mentioned the negative effects on the economic and social condition of Punjab due to the exit of youth based on the field research conducted in five villages of Patiala District. His major findings were that the maximum number of people going abroad are from the age group of 20-30; the cost per person of immigration is more than Rs. 12 Lacs; people are falling into huge debt traps while sending wards/family members and the remittances received from the immigrants do not cover the loan taken to send them. The major reasons cited for immigration are unemployment, poor living conditions and drug abuse. He concluded his lecture with some suggestions to stop this phenomenon such as creating awareness about the pitfalls of illegal immigration, initiatives by the government to increase employment, promoting skill based education and improving living conditions in Punjab. The lecture ended with rousing applause from students as all the facts were supported by statistical figures. During his lecture, Officiating Principal, Dr. Meenakshi Negi, Dr. Shivani Kaushal, Dr. Preeti Arora, Dr. Jyoti Singla, Asst. Prof. Swarn Singh, Asst. Prof. Baljit Singh and Asst. Prof. Sukhwinder Singh were present.
